A Day in the Life of an IB Student at IISD

Immersion into the heart of an IB school in Rome

An Immersive International IB Learning Environment

A plurilingual environment where multiculturalism, critical thinking and a global mindset come together.

At the Institut International Saint Dominique, the IB programme is more than a programme; it is a daily experience that transforms the way students learn and understand the world. On a six‑hectare green campus, students evolve in an international environment where more than forty nationalities meet. Each day encourages them to develop critical thinking, autonomy and a genuine global mindset, guided by a dedicated teaching team and a structured, caring learning environment.

Nadine HAKME, Coordinator of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), speaks on the matter

As the coordinator of the IB Diploma Programme, I observe every day that the IB at IISD goes far beyond academic content and timetables. What truly defines our students’ experience is the balance we maintain between structure and autonomy, supported by a green campus, a plurilingual environment, and small class sizes. Here, students explore, experiment, and reflect through the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS, connecting learning to real-world situations and engaging respectfully within a community of over forty nationalities.

An international campus that inspires

It is 8 a.m. at IISD. In the pathways of the campus, students arrive in small groups, naturally switching between English, French and Italian. Cultural diversity enriches every learning moment and creates an open, dynamic and deeply international atmosphere. Diploma Programme students begin their day ready to take on the challenges of a curriculum renowned for its academic rigour and global outlook. They join classes in spacious classrooms that create a comfortable learning environment, where rigorous, multilingual teaching fosters engagement, curiosity and critical thinking.

Teaching and personalised support

Once in the classroom, students follow courses taught by a highly qualified international teaching team made up of experienced educators who are passionate about the IB. Each teacher supports students individually, identifies their strengths and needs, and adapts their methods to strengthen understanding, independence, and critical thinking. Thanks to this personalised guidance, students progress at their own pace while being encouraged to collaborate, explore, and ask questions. This caring and stimulating environment enables them to develop strong academic skills, as well as the self‑confidence and open‑mindedness essential for succeeding in a globalised world.

Science, technology and creativity: learning through exploration

Classroom learning comes to life in environments designed to stimulate experimentation, inquiry, and creativity. Science laboratories, technology rooms, and artistic spaces provide students with an ideal setting to apply their knowledge. The programme fosters independence, critical thinking, and personal engagement through its key components: The Extended Essay Theory of Knowledge (TOK) CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)

Well‑being, creativity and personal identity at the heart of school life

In the afternoon and between classes, students take part in artistic, athletic and civic activities such as visual arts, theatre, film, MUN simulations, CAS service projects, debate workshops, or outdoor sports. Supported by a caring and international teaching team, they develop their creativity, initiative and ability to collaborate. This dynamic strengthens their self‑confidence, leadership, and personal growth within an international environment.

Preparing for the future with ambition

Thanks to personalised guidance, IISD IB students gain access to top universities worldwide: Sciences Po, NYU, King’s College, LUISS, Sapienza, EPFL, Vatel, Brunel University…
