From Terza Media to the IB

Understanding the Bridges Between the Italian and International Systems

From the Italian System to the IB

The transition from the Italian school system to the International Baccalaureate Programme is an important milestone for many Italian and expatriate families living in Rome. At the Institut International Saint‑Dominique, this transition is carefully designed, structured, and supported from middle school onwards, enabling every student to approach the IB with confidence and peace of mind.

An International Pathway Starting in Terza Media

Students completing Terza Media can join an international pathway as early as Grade 9. This programme was created to build a natural bridge between the expectations of the Italian system and international pedagogical approaches. It includes: advanced courses to progressively strengthen language skills research modules to develop independent thinking debate workshops to build argumentation and public‑speaking skills global perspectives introducing students to international issues This pathway allows students to retain the strengths of the Italian curriculum while discovering the active, interdisciplinary, and reflective methods that characterise the IB.

Multiple Pathways: ESABAC, Cambridge, and the International Curriculum

IISD also offers alternative pathways that facilitate mobility between national and international systems: ESABAC, a French‑Italian dual diploma recognised by both countries Cambridge Lower Secondary, strengthening linguistic and scientific skills in English interdisciplinary modules enabling students to navigate between different educational frameworks These options allow students to build a coherent academic pathway aligned with their goals and future orientation. With multilingual teachers and personalised support, each student can choose the route that suits them best while preparing for a diploma recognised worldwide.

Personalised Support at Every Stage of the IB Journey

At IISD, support does not stop at entry into the programme. It continues throughout the entire IB journey. Each student benefits from attentive guidance tailored to their level, pace, and specific needs. The teaching team provides: individualised support regular feedback on assignments follow‑up meetings help with organisation and time management This personalised framework enables students to gain autonomy, overcome challenges, and reveal their full potential.

Active and Practical Learning: Learning by Doing

Our IB Programme stands out for its resolutely practical approach. Each year, students develop new projects, explore global issues, conduct personal research, and engage in community and service actions.

The three core components of the Diploma Programme, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), encourage students to analyse, create, experiment, and propose concrete solutions.

Together, CAS, Theory of Knowledge, and the Extended Essay shape reflective learners who can connect disciplines, think ethically, and take ownership of their learning. Supported and encouraged, they gain autonomy, take initiative, and defend their ideas with confidence.

IB Core Components

Extended Essay (EE)

The Extended Essay develops independent research skills through in‑depth investigation and structured academic writing.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

TOK encourages students to think critically about knowledge, question assumptions, and understand diverse perspectives.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

CAS develops project management, collaboration, and a sense of responsibility through real‑life experiences.

The SOS Matière Programme: Tailored Language Support

Because every student progresses at their own pace, IISD has created a dedicated support system for those who experience difficulties in languages or key subjects: SOS Matière. This programme offers: small‑group support, one‑to‑one sessions, targeted reinforcement of language skills, confidence‑building in oral expression. Students who struggle to express themselves in English, French, or Italian can review essential concepts, practise in a reassuring environment, and progress without pressure. The goal is clear: to ensure that every student can thrive within a demanding international curriculum without ever feeling left behind.

A Bridge Toward an International Future

Through these programmes, IISD ensures a smooth transition between Terza Media and the IB Programme.

Students gradually acquire the linguistic, methodological, and reflective skills needed to succeed in an international environment.

They build a strong, globally recognised academic pathway that opens doors to the world’s leading universities.
